In My Own Words
What LASO feels like to me
People like to say “Mi casa es tu casa.” I think LASO encapsulates that phrase. It is a space to find home away from home and reconnect with a community embedded with different cultures and experiences.
What LASO means to me
My journey in higher education, unlike my upbringing, lacked a vibrant Latino community. It became an open wound of sorts — one that I didn’t realize I had until LASO was founded. From the moment LASO began, I saw an increased visibility of Latino student leadership at SMC. It is here that I see a foundation for community, culture, inclusion, and service. In some ways, LASO healed that wound.

My hope for LASO
When I dream about LASO and what it can accomplish, I consider a future that centralizes experiences as a form of celebration. I hope that every student that joins LASO, whether Latin American or not, will find a place to make friends, learn about the cultures, and walk away with resources to make their time at SMC more enjoyable!
